Anthony Vera's trip to California On November 12, FSSSP annual meeting attendees were proud to hear Assistant Park Manager Anthony Vera’s account of his trip to California this year to help that state fight its most pervasive and serious incidence of wildfires in history. He used 5 weeks of personal leave and joined other firefighters from around the US and Canada to assist with efforts to contain a wild fire that eventually consumed hundreds of thousands of acres and numerous homes. Vera, who is certified in fire management and oversees controlled burns among his other duties at Silver Springs, is eminently qualified to do this work. FSSSP Secretary, Marianne Marcoux took minutes of the meeting and aptly described Vera’s service: "Accompanied by some remarkable pictures, Anthony talked about his deployment to help contain this year’s devastating wildfires. He was kept busy providing his extensive experience with prescribed burns, structure protection, laying hoses, chainsaw work, evacuating homes, all the while walking miles carrying 80-pound packs. Anthony also shared a few videos of impressive smoke columns and eerie night burns. Thank you, Anthony. for sharing your experience and for your service! We are fortunate to have such a high level of expertise as Ranger Anthony on our Park staff. " |
